Mr. Jimmy O’Pharrow was the founder of the famed Starrett City Boxing Club in Brooklyn, NY where he trained and mentored young people for over 30 years.
Born in 1925, Jimmy O'Pharrow grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. He was fondly known as Jimmy "O". He was a supervisor at a box factory in Queens before he opened Starrett City Boxing Club in 1978. He started with just him and the four walls. People who passed through the gym became world champions, cops, dentists and lawyers amongst other professions because of him and what he started. Jimmy "O" trained current heavyweight champion Monte "2 Gunz" Barrett, former world heavyweight champion Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs, former welterweight champion Luis Collazo, and welterweight title contender Dmitriy "Star of David" Salita. He also trained fighters for the Daily News Golden Gloves Tournament for over 20 years.
In 2007 the legendary Jimmy O’Pharrow founded The Jimmy "O" Foundation. His vision for this foundation is to allow athletes in the sport of boxing an opportunity to grow academically as well as athletically. The Jimmy "O" foundation helps boxers pursue their dream of a higher education. Jimmy "O" was a student of higher learning and he knew that many of these fighters came from impoverished situations and deserved the same educational opportunities as other kids. Jimmy "O" never cared about anyone’s religion or ethnic background. The way he saw it was that they are all God’s children, most of them struggling in a tough environment trying to find another way besides drugs and prison.
His commitment to the sport of boxing and teaching is unparallel to the greatest in the world of boxing. The Jimmy "O" Foundation raises money every day of the year to provide these educational opportunities to young fighters who would like to further their education.
